Driving During the Freeze in Alaska

1/25/2012 10:39:32 AM
Winter is hitting Alaska hard this year, and petroleum-based products are in short supply in some remote regions. Like many, you might be staying at home more, to preserve fuel for heating and driving. That could also mean that when you do go out, you’ll be coping with unusually difficult driving conditions. Extra care may be required, or you could find yourself having to deal with a claim on your AK auto insurance.

Snow and ice may be very thick, so don’t be in a rush. It can’t matter that much if you’re five or ten minutes later arriving wherever you’re going, can it? Better to be a bit late and arrive safely. Visibility could be limited too, so that’s another good reason to take it slowly. It can be much more difficult to stop in slippery conditions, and you risk skids and collisions if you travel too fast in a freeze.

Try and plan any trips so you get a few things done in one go – it could be some time before more supplies of fuel get through to your location in AK. Auto insurance may help cover you financially if something goes wrong, but there could be difficulty in evacuating any injured people during this time, so think carefully about how you drive if you need to go out while the conditions are so challenging.
